Statewide Indigenous Community Gathering

In late December 2025, Urban Native Collective hosted a statewide gathering of Indigenous community leaders on the sacred ground of Ft. Ancient Earthworks. Organizers traveled from Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland to share a meal, reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, and set collective goals for ongoing advocacy across Ohio.

Leaders from each city shared their priorities and current efforts, addressing issues ranging from access to healthcare and increased visibility, to food justice and holding local museums accountable to NAGPRA compliance. Discussions emphasized the importance of  expanding partnerships and strengthening relationships with both state government entities and Tribal governments in order to protect and engage our communities with the many sacred sites and Earthworks across Ohio.

Representatives from Urban Native Collective also had the opportunity to share and gather feedback on the Ohio Native Land Initiative and ongoing mapping project. This resource will document traditional foods, plant medicines, and sacred sites creating a shared tool for intergenerational knowledge sharing. Community members will be able to contribute locations and teachings to support learning among one another and for future generations.

Leaders closed the gathering by calling for unity and solidarity in the years to come, grounded in collective responsibility, advocacy, and care for the land.
